ArtRoute Station 5 - Otto Marquard
A station on the art route around Untersee by the painter Otto Marquard in Seeweg, Allensbach on Lake Constance
Otto Marquard initially trained as a decorative painter before studying under Prof. Hans Thoma at the Karlsruhe Art Academy in 1904. In 1926, he settled in Allensbach am Seeweg and opened a guesthouse there with his wife, which became a meeting place for writers, left-wing politicians and fellow artists. He helped persecuted people to escape across the lake and described himself as a painter of peace. His pacifist views led to him being banned from painting and exhibiting from 1935.
Marquard is a painter in the traditional sense. His naturalistic portraits, still lifes and landscapes are depictions of reality. The painting shows the path to Marquard's home.
