A highlight of the Mainau day is certainly a visit to the second largest butterfly house in Germany. A tour through the exotic landscape with its unique vegetation will give you a real tropical feeling:

At around 90% humidity and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C, you can marvel at free-flying tropical butterflies from Africa, Asia, Central and South America in around 120 different species, and occasionally see moths with a wingspan of up to 30 cm. 70% of the butterflies come directly from their countries of origin, where they are bred in special breeding farms. They arrive on the island of Mainau as pupae every week. The remaining 30% reproduce directly in the butterfly house on the respective food plants, where the development from egg to caterpillar (larva) and chrysalis to the finished butterfly can be observed.you will find a wide range of Mainau souvenirs in the store. Coffee, ice cream and drinks are available all year round in the bistro area. During the season you can also get a small snack.
