Cultural Center GEMS
The GEMS Cultural Center offers cabaret, theater, movies, concerts, poetry slams, and much more. This sociocultural center combines a professional cultural program with volunteer work and serves as an important hub for the regional cultural scene.
The GEMS Cultural Center in Singen is a vibrant hub for culture, community, and creativity. Since 1989, this sociocultural center has been housed in a restored historic building near the city park. With a diverse program featuring cabaret, theater, concerts, readings, film screenings, and poetry slams, GEMS is one of the most important cultural venues in the Hegau region.
The history of GEMS began in 1978 in the Arlen district of the municipality of Rielasingen-Worblingen. Ten years later, the cultural center moved to Singen. The city provided the former “Kreuz” inn for this purpose, a building that dates back in part to the 17th century and was extensively restored and expanded for its new use. This made Singen one of the first municipalities in Baden-Württemberg to make a targeted investment in a sociocultural center.
Today, GEMS offers a diverse cultural program nearly year-round, featuring well-known artists from cabaret, comedy, music, and theater. Film enthusiasts will also find something to enjoy: the municipal cinema “Weitwinkel” regularly screens selected films, classics, and themed series.
A distinctive feature of GEMS is its strong commitment to volunteer work. Various initiatives and cultural groups actively help shape the program. In the GEMS theater workshop, people of all ages can act themselves and gain new experiences alongside professional artists.
A highlight of the annual program is the GEMS Open Air in the summer. On the lawn behind the cultural center in the city park, films, cabaret, comedy, poetry slams, and theater are presented under the open sky on several evenings—with a view of the Hohentwiel.
