Feuenried Wetland and Moorland Complex
The Feuenried near Überlingen am Ried is a protected wetland and bog complex situated in a former glacial dead-end. This extensive natural monument offers unique habitats and insights into the landscape shaped by the Ice Age.
The Feuenried, situated north-east of Überlingen am Ried, is a protected natural monument covering a large area and a unique bog and wetland habitat. The area originated as a former dead ice hole and is therefore a striking testament to the development of the landscape around the western shores of Lake Constance during the Ice Age. The moorland area features characteristic vegetation and is of particular ecological value. At the same time, this sensitive area is affected by nutrient inputs and changes to the water balance. To preserve the typical moorland vegetation in the long term, the city's landscape plan provides, amongst other things, for keeping the area open through scrub clearance measures. You can explore the Feuenried on the ‘Quellenrundwanderweg’ circular spring trail around Überlingen am Ried. Both the approximately 4.5-kilometre and the 9-kilometre routes lead through the forest to the biotope. An information board on site provides interesting facts about this special natural area.
