Hohenhewen
Engen's local mountain, the Hohenhewen (846 m) is a phonolite cone. Around 1170, the lords of Engen built a mighty castle — known then as the lords of Hewen — and ruled the region for nearly 400 years.
Beschreibung
During the Thirty Years' War (1639) the castle was besieged and burned by the Bavarians and then passed to the Fürstenberg family by marriage. The ruins were excavated by the Black Forest Association Engen in 1937 and acquired by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1957. A few castle features are still intact.
Hikers climb 300 m to the ruins in order to enjoy the lovely views over the entire Hegau region, and in clear weather to Lake Constance and the Alps.
There is a look-out tower on the peak for even higher perspectives.
