Miriam Prantl’s ‘Lichtband’ (2007), situated on the courtyard-facing façade of the Stadthalle Singen, is a meditative LED light installation that intertwines colour, light and space in an innovative way. The interlocking LED strips respond to the existing architecture of the glass façade and to Joseph Kosuth’s neon work ‘Located World’, installed opposite. Gentle, fluid control creates shifts in light and colour that are comparable to a rhythmic breath – oscillating between stillness and movement, colour and space.
Prantl, who explores in depth the reduction of colour to its visual essence, applies her painterly approach to light: The LED strips create seamless transitions between colours, which are reflected on glass surfaces, ceilings and in the surrounding area. In this way, the light strip becomes a living spatial installation that subtly animates the public space without aggressively dominating it. The viewer is invited to perceive the interplay of light, colour and architecture and to become part of an expanded spatial experience.
The work combines functional aspects with artistic design: it enhances the festive atmosphere of the Stadthalle, whilst at the same time adding an aesthetic counterpoint. Intensities, light wells and reflections create a space where energy can be absorbed and tensions balanced – a characteristic feature of Prantl’s works, which employ colour and light as integral design elements.
The project was realised with funding from the Stadthallenförderverein Singen e.V.. The strip of light transforms the city hall into a radiant landmark that harmonises art, architecture and urban life.
