Monastery garden Allerheiligen
Monastery garden of the Benedictine monks, who dealt extensively with the cultivation of medicinal, spice and vegetable plants.
Beschreibung
The development of garden culture in Europe has its starting point in the monastery garden of the Benedictine monks, who dealt extensively with the cultivation of medicinal, spice and vegetable plants, on the one hand to produce medicines for the monastery pharmacy, on the other hand to to meet the needs of the monastery kitchen. The area east of the cloister has always been called "Chrutgarte", so that the herb garden reconstructed in 1937/38 must have been located at this point in the past, in today's monastery garden. The book "de cultura hortorum", the Hortulus by the Reichenau monk Walahfrid Strabo, was consulted for the selection of the plant species.
