Schaffhausen Herb Garden
The Schaffhausen Herb Garden in Singen City Park combines history and nature: aromatic and medicinal plants arranged according to a historic monastery layout, framed by hedges, clay walls, and a symbolic fountain—a cultural and botanical highlight.
Located in the heart of Singen’s city park is the Schaffhausen Herb Garden, a special highlight for nature and culture lovers. Designed according to the St. Gallen monastery plan and gifted by the city of Schaffhausen, the garden combines the region’s shared cultural history with a nature-oriented experience for visitors.
The garden features the typical layout of a historic monastery garden, framed by hedges and clay walls. Designed according to Walafried Strabo’s famous “Hortulus,” the garden features aromatic and medicinal plants that were cultivated in the region over 1,200 years ago. Each herb variety tells its own story and offers insights into the historical use of plants for healing, seasoning, and daily sustenance.
A symbolic fountain in the center of the garden reflects the sky as the “source of life” and lends the grounds a meditative, spiritual character. Visitors can stroll along the well-maintained paths through the herb beds, discover the diversity of the plants, and be inspired by their scents, colors, and shapes.
The Schaffhausen Herb Garden is a place of relaxation, learning, and inspiration. It invites families, strollers, nature lovers, and gardening enthusiasts to experience the harmonious blend of cultural history, botany, and a relaxed atmosphere. Whether for a quick stroll or a longer visit to the city park, the Herb Garden offers a unique experience in Singen and brings the historical plant world to life in a vivid way.
