One of the people who shaped the town of Radolfzell was the honorary citizen and poet Joseph Victor von Scheffel. Impressed by the area around the lake, the Karlsruhe-born poet bought a 10,000-square-meter lakefront property on the Mettnau in 1871 after a recreational vacation in Radolfzell and had a country house built on it in the Italian style, which is still called "Villa Seehalde" today. Today, it houses one of the clinics of the METTNAU rehabilitation facilities.
