The parish church of St Elisabeth in Singen was consecrated in 1965 and is the town’s fifth Catholic parish centre. It is dedicated to St Elisabeth of Thuringia and today forms part of the Singen Catholic Pastoral Unit within the Hegau deanery. The parish has around 3,000 Catholics.
The modern church building was constructed on the site of a former gravel pit. The architecture is characterised by the building’s clean concrete forms and its 27-metre-high tower. The nave is spanned by an elliptical dome, supported by just a few steel and concrete columns, which lends the interior an open, light-filled atmosphere. In total, the church can accommodate around 800 worshippers.
Several artistic elements pay homage to the church’s patron saint. In front of the upper main entrance stands a basalt lava stele; inside the tower is a large mosaic of Saint Elizabeth; and in the side aisle is an enamel portrait of Saint Elizabeth. The church interior also features numerous works of art, including pieces by Egino Weinert, which characterise the liturgical space. The materials deliberately reflect the landscape of the Hegau region: the altar and ambo, for instance, are made of basalt lava, a rock typical of this volcanically formed region. The church is accessible from the courtyard and continues to serve as a vibrant venue for church services, parish life and church events.
