Singen (Hohentwiel)
The lively city under the Hohentwiel
Art, culture and shopping experience under the volcano
Singen is a diverse and lively town full of contrasts. While some still refer to it as an industrial, working-class town, others have long praised it as a cultural hub. Situated between the Black Forest and the Alps, just a few kilometres from Lake Constance, Singen is a young town nestled in the charming volcanic landscape of the Hegau. The town's local landmark is the mighty, steeply rising volcanic cone of the Hohentwiel, which carries the largest fortress ruins in Germany.
The town below the Hohentwiel is a cultural, economic and social centre with excellent transport links. Running between the town hall and the train station is Singen's shopping mile, which boasts a wide range of attractive brands in both small and large stores. At the end of 2020, the “CANO” shopping centre opened in the heart of Singen, offering over 16,000 m² of retail space and around 85 stores. The compact city centre's metropolitan, modern atmosphere, complete with street cafés, also invites you to linger.
Singen is also a vibrant city of art and culture, boasting numerous cultural institutions. In 2014, the city gained a new cultural highlight when its art museum was completely modernised. The privately run MAC Art & Cars museum, which displays art and classic cars together, has earned the city a reputation that extends well beyond the region. MAC 2 opened in 2019. Singen is also home to an independent art scene. Established in Singen in 2015, Galerie Vayhinger regularly invites contemporary artists to exhibit and has become another important player in the city's vibrant art scene. The Stadthalle Singen hosts a wide range of stage events. The socio-cultural centre 'GEMS' and the pub theatre 'Die Färbe' offer cabaret, theatre, comedy, cinema, jazz and much more.
To learn about the people who settled in Hegau from the end of the last Ice Age around 15,000 years ago until the early Middle Ages, visit the Hegau Archaeological Museum "Hegau Museum". It has one of the most impressive prehistoric and early historic exhibitions in Baden-Württemberg.
Taking place every July, the "Hohentwiel Festival" presents well-known pop and rock artists against the incomparable backdrop of the old fortress. A festival highlight, which has been running for over 50 years, is the "Burgfest", offering 90 hours of cabaret and music on one day.
There are numerous well-signposted cycling and hiking trails in and around Singen for cyclists, hikers and walkers alike. A tour along the picturesque River Aach is an experience to be enjoyed by all ages. The premium ‘Hegauer Kegelspiel’ hiking trails allow you to experience nature intensely and authentically. Bizarre volcanic formations, stately knights' castles and enchanting river landscapes await you in the Hegau region, centred on the city of Singen at the southern tip of Baden.
