Wegebeschaffenheit
The tour commences in a picturesque location amidst the lush greenery and gentle rustle of the trees on the edge of the forest, offering visitors the opportunity to leave the stresses of everyday life behind. After a steep ascent, the route crosses the high plateau of the Schienerberg, regularly changing between Germany and Switzerland. The views of the Hegau volcanoes are always impressive, particularly from the Herrentisch. This premium hiking trail showcases the Hegau region at its most beautiful, with the volcanic cones strung together like pearls on a necklace.
The Albertine Steig pays tribute to the legacy of Albertine Schuhmacher. Albertine was born in 1893 and emigrated to America with her fiancé in the early 1920s. The relationship was terminated and Albertine returned home with her brother's assistance. From that point on, she led a life of complete seclusion at the Brandhof. On a monthly basis, she travelled to Bohlingen to purchase groceries. According to witness reports, she entered the grocery store via the rear entrance, dressed in black, hunched over, and carrying a sack on her back. Until the mid-1980s, the 90-year-old woman was able to walk up and down the Schienerberg. On occasion, she would even accompany the owners of neighbouring farms while they were operating their tractors. Having experienced setbacks in love, she adopted a reclusive lifestyle, yet she maintained a positive outlook despite facing challenges. Albertine lived to the age of 93.
Autorentipp
We would like to recommend the Hofgut Oberwald for relaxed breaks (please check opening times).
Alternatively, hikers can enjoy their own snacks at the benches located along the route or take a longer break at the Chroobachhütte grill site.
Wegbeschreibung
The hiking trail begins at the main gate of the Albertine Steig car park, located at the base of the Schienerberg. After crossing the gravel farm track, the trail leads into the opposite forest. The route then exits the forest, continuing on to the right along the Herrenweg. After traversing a considerable distance through an open field, the route leads past a field cross and onto the second path on the right, which leads towards Schienerberg. Proceed to the right at the edge of the forest, following the meadow path to reach the start of the Stationenweg trail. The Stationenweg trail then continues to the Schienerberg. Following the challenging ascent, visitors can enjoy a relatively undemanding hike on the Gitterberg plateau. The border between Austria and Switzerland is crossed at Bühlarzhof and Brandhof.
The next stage of the journey is a shorter section through the forest, which will take you past Unterwald. In Oberwald, there is a small inn where you can take a break. The trail continues alongside the border until it reaches the edge of the forest. At this point, the path divides to the right, ascending the hill. The route leads over the Hirschenbrünneli to the Chroobachhütte. Here, visitors can enjoy particularly beautiful views of the Hegau region. The trail then continues in an eastward direction along the Firstweg, leading to the Herrentisch. As at the Chroobachhütte, there is a designated grill area where you can take a longer break. The Hegau region is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. The Hegau volcanoes are arranged in a linear formation, extending up to the Hegaublick. The route continues along the border, switching from Germany to Switzerland and back again. The next intermediate destination is Maria Tann. An additional seating area is available for those who wish to take a break. From there, the hiking trail continues downhill to the edge of the forest and the Albertine Steig parking lot, where the trail started.
