Wegebeschaffenheit
The volcanic mountains of Hohenstoffeln, Mägdeberg, Hohenkrähen and Hohentwiel form the backdrop to this tour in Hegau. These mighty relics from prehistoric times stand out abruptly against the landscape. All of the volcanoes are topped by the remains of medieval castles.
Autorentipp
Climbing up Hohentwiel is well worth the effort — the view of the fortress ruins and Lake Constance stretching all the way to the Alps from the old church tower is stunning!
Wegbeschreibung
Our cycle tour starts at the car park of the swimming pool in Hilzingen (460 m). We then cycle along Riedheimerstraße towards Riedheim (480 m). There, we turn right into Eduard-Presser-Straße. After the next right turn, Riedheim Castle comes into view on the right. We then continue along Turmstraße, turning left after the last houses. At the top, we turn right and go straight ahead at the next junction, following the dirt track. Continue along this track until you reach a junction on the left. Ride uphill on the grass pavers to the farmstead, through it, and then turn left. At the next junction, keep right and then turn left onto the dirt track. Soon, we will come back onto a tarmac road. Turn right here to reach the Homboll farmstead, where refreshments are available. We then leave the farmstead and head towards Weiterdingen (535 m). We enter the village via Pfaffwieserstraße, turning right at the fountain onto Kirchstraße. After turning right twice, we arrive at Weiterdingen Castle at kilometre 8.5. Continue downhill, then turn left at the crossroads into Amthausstraße. Keep to the right and leave the village via Binningerstraße. Follow the road to Binningen (537 m), passing Seeweilerhof, until you reach the edge of the village at kilometre 12.2. Turn right here and bear right again. Take the district road to Welschingen (475 m). At the beginning of Welschingen, at the 16.7-kilometre mark, turn right towards Weiterdingen and then take the second tarmac road on the left.
Stay on this cycle path until you reach Mühlhausen-Ehingen (452 m). We then go through the underpass on the left into the village. Keeping to the right, we come to Mühlhausen Castle, which is on the right-hand side. Continue along Schlossstraße to the church. Then, we ride back to the next junction and turn left. We then leave the village via a bridge, turning right. Ride back a short distance onto the cycle path. Turn left. At kilometre 23.1, the challenging but rewarding climb up to the Mägdeberg ruins (654 m) begins, offering magnificent views of the Hegau region. Please leave your bikes in the car park. After the tour, continue downhill towards Mühlhausen-Ehingen. Soon, turn right. After a while, turn left at the top, then right again shortly afterwards towards Hohenkrähen. The path becomes quite narrow in this area up to Hohenkrähen, so it is advisable to push your bicycle in places.
Once you reach Hohenkrähen (642 m), the path leads up to the summit and the ruins of Hohenkrähen castle. Here, you will find another magnificent view of the Hegau region. We continue along our route towards Singen. We follow a gravel path to a car park. From there, we cycle a short distance downhill along the district road. At the Hegauhaus, we turn right and head uphill. First, we turn right, then left. After passing the Paradieshof farm, we turn left at the last farmyard, at kilometre 27.8. At the next junction, turn right into the forest. Continue left and then right again. We then leave the forest and arrive at a gravel path at kilometre 29.0, below Hohentwiel. Turn right here. Continue until you reach a tarmac path branching off to the left towards Hohentwiel. Follow this path uphill to reach the Hohentwiel estate. We have to pay an entrance fee to visit the ruins there. Follow the Volcano Trail up to the Hohentwiel ruins (688 m). We will have covered 31.5 kilometres by this point. We then cycle back along the volcano trail, bearing left, and soon reach the tarmac road which takes us downhill towards Hilzingen. At the junction for Twielfeld, keep right towards Hilzingen. Via Hohentwielstraße, with a left turn followed by a right turn, we reach the main road. Continue along this road to the church and, opposite, Hilzingen Castle. From the castle, we turn right onto the main road, then left towards the swimming pool and into Riedheimerstraße, which takes us back to our starting point.
