Wegebeschaffenheit
This cross-border cycle tour starts at the car park of the former State Garden Show in Singen. The route takes you along gravel paths and shaded forest trails, as well as some paved cycle paths. First, you will follow the small River Aach, and later the River Rhine, to Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls in Neuhausen — Europe's largest waterfall. On the return journey, you can take a boat trip to Stein am Rhein or catch a direct train back to Singen. Highlights include the ride alongside the Rhine and the impressive waterfall. City tours of Schaffhausen and the return trip by boat to Stein am Rhein are also recommended.
Wegbeschreibung
Starting from the car park at the Landesgartenschau grounds, head towards the city centre and the Aach river. Then, continue south through Schlachthausstraße to the Friedrich Wöhler Gymnasium. The route then crosses to the other side of the river and follows the Aach to Rielasingen-Worblingen. Turn right onto Durgangsstraße and follow the road through the village towards Ramsen (CH). Cross the border into Switzerland via the cycle path running alongside the road. Pass through the district of Ramsen called Moskau, turn right at the petrol station and continue through the old village centre. Cross the small river Biber and turn left again at the Alte Mühle (Old Mill) onto the signposted cycle path to Schaffhausen.
Please note: do not follow the signs to Gailingen here! After passing the small hamlet of Wilen, follow the red cycle signs marked No. 14. As you pass through the Staffelwald forest, you will reach Obergailingen and Gailingen. Cross to the other side of the Rhine at the covered wooden bridge. Immediately after the bridge, turn right. Shortly after Unterhof Castle, turn right over a small bridge.
Continue following the No. 14 signs, leaving Diessenhofen and passing the St Katharinental monastery. Continue through the idyllic forest to reach the former Paradies monastery. You can then take a small passenger ferry across the Rhine. The tour then continues via Langwiesen and Feuerthalen to Schaffhausen. Turn left before the Rhine Bridge to follow the river to the Rhine Falls.
There are various options for returning to the starting point in Singen from Schaffhausen. During the summer months, you can take a boat trip from Schaffhausen via Diessenhofen to Stein am Rhein. Follow the cycle path from there past Hemishofen to Ramsen, where you will rejoin the route you took to Singen on the way there. Outside of the boat season, you can take the train from Feuerthalen to Stein am Rhein. Alternatively, you can take the direct train from Schaffhausen to Singen.
Please note that there is a charge for taking your bicycle with you in both cases!
