Hegau volcanoes - a landscape created from fire and ice
This Natura Trail runs through the western Hegau FFH area, the Hohentwiel-Hohenkrähen bird sanctuary and the Hohentwiel, Hohenstoffeln and Mägdeberg nature reserves. Due to the great geological differences, the area is characterized by a variety of different habitats:
Species-rich nutrient-poor and dry grasslands, warm rocky sites and scree slopes as well as heat-loving mixed hillside forests are of particular importance. The hike leads to castle ruins, whereby a day or half-day hike should be planned to visit these cultural monuments (especially the Hohentwiel), especially with children.
Autorentipp
Sufficient time should be planned for the castle ruins, especially with children. The open basalt quarry at Hohenstoffeln is not only impressive for those interested in geology.
Wegbeschreibung
From the Landesgartenschau train stop on Schaffhauser Str. out of town, turn right into Hohentwielstr. Follow the signposted footpath (Widerholdweg) up to Domäne Hohentwiel.
Either climb the Hohentwiel ruins here or continue directly in the direction of Hohenkrähen past the estate, after 400m turn right at the last stables down the meadow slope, then turn left and take the next path on the right over the highway. Following the path through the forest for approx. 1.0 km, we take the path on the left at Ettenberg and reach a junction after approx. 5oom. Here we turn right to the Staufenhof. Past the Staufenhof farm, we turn left at the Krützenbühlerhof farm; after approx. 1.5 km, the path leads past the Römersberg farm to Duchtlingen. In the village, we turn left into Hegaustraße (180° bend) and take the path towards Hohenstoffeln. At the end of the village, we cross the country road and keep straight on. After approx. 1 km we reach a biogas plant, then we turn left onto the field path and cross the local road. Continue straight ahead, ascending the Feldwiesenweg. At the next local road we turn left and after approx. 250m we take the path half-right to the Sennhof, which we reach after approx. 1.5 km. Shortly after the Sennhof, we reach the Hohenstoffeln nature reserve. We take the next path on the right and after approx. 500m reach the turn-off to the left to the summits, which we reach after a further 600m.
After descending on the same path, we keep left towards Weiterdingen. At the basalt quarry, we keep right past the Hohenstoffeln hunting lodge and reach Weiterdingen after approx. 1.8 km. At the fountain in Binninger Str., we turn left and immediately take the next right. When we reach Welschinger Str., we keep left and turn right at the end of the village. Here we follow the local road (towards Mühlhausen) for approx. 800m, then turn right and take the next path to the right again towards Hegau- Kreuz and reach this wonderful vantage point. From here, a narrow path descends, which after approx. 400m leads into a forest path on the left, on which we ascend to the Mägdeberg. At the next fork in the path, we keep left and reach the ruins after a short ascent. From the Mägdeberg we descend to Mühlhausen, pass under the main road and then turn left to Mühlhausen railroad station in about one kilometer.
Take the Seehas back to the Singen-Landesgartenschau parking lot.

Weitere Informationen
This Natura Trail is dedicated to Heinrich Weber (*11.09.1885 in Freiburg September 25, 1944 in the Mauthausen concentration camp). Heinrich Weber was one of the outstanding personalities of the labor movement in the region until 1933. From 1920 to 1933, he was a representative of the Singen SPD on the citizens' committee and at times chairman of the stokers' and machinists' union. In his spare time, the passionate hiker was interested in scientific issues. From 1923 until it was banned by the National Socialists, Heinrich Weber was chairman of the Singen Friends of Nature. The Naturfreundehaus Bodensee in Markelfingen is thanks to his initiative. As part of “Aktion Gitter”, the great wave of arrests that followed the assassination attempt of July 20, 1944, Heinrich Weber was arrested and deported via detours to the Mauthausen concentration camp near Linz, where he died on September 25, 1944. In the 100th year of the existence of the Singen local group, the Naturefriends commemorate Heinrich Weber with this Natura Trail, a man with social commitment, civil courage and a wealth of knowledge in the fields of natural history and geology, who was a friend of his close homeland, the Hegau.
