The starting point of the hike is Gaienhofen (411 metres above sea level), the artists' corner on Lake Constance. The poet Hermann Hesse lived here from 1907 to 1912 and the Hermann Hesse House can be visited as part of a guided tour, as can the garden he created. The Hesse Museum Gaienhofen is now housed in his first home. On the way there, you can marvel at a work by modern sculptor Peter Lenk on the main road in front of the pharmacy: the "Dix Curve" with figures from the "Metropolitan Triptych" by painter Otto Dix points to his house in the Hemmenhofen district. Dix lived there after his expulsion by the Nazis from 1936 until his death in 1969. The Gaienhofen Castle Protestant School in the former castle of the Bishops of Constance also enjoys a national reputation.
Initially, the trail markings are a green diamond on a yellow background of the Black Forest - Jura - Lake Constance long-distance hiking trail of the Black Forest Association. Local paths are marked with a yellow diamond.
The hiking trail climbs up the Schiener Berg to the former Schrotzburg castle. However, only a few remains of its walls have been preserved.
Along old boundary stones between Germany and Switzerland, the route continues along the most beautiful part of the Firstweg to the Herrentisch rest area. Here, hikers can enjoy the magnificent view of "Des Herrgotts Kegelspiel". This is how the local poet Ludwig Finckh described the picturesque Hegaulandschaft landscape with its volcanic mountains. Singen, Rielasingen and Worblingen lie in front of it. On a clear day, the view extends as far as the Black Forest.
