In the Hegauer Kegelbergland immediately west of Singen there are a series of domed, cone-shaped vents from extinct volcanoes, all of which tower over the landscape at 400-600 m above sea level with isolated heights of between 643 m and 867 m. Around 150,000 years ago, the Hegau region was also covered by a thick ice sheet. The glacier cleared away molasse and tuff, but the harder phonolite and basalt cores were more resistant and withstood the masses of ice. In this way, the solidified magma was exposed and it was this that gave the landscape its present appearance.
