In the Hegauer Kegelbergland immediately west of Singen there are a series of domed, cone-shaped vents from extinct volcanoes, all of which tower over the landscape at 400-600 m above sea level with isolated heights of between 643 m and 867 m. Around 150,000 years ago, the Hegau region was also covered by a thick ice sheet. The glacier cleared away molasse and tuff, but the harder phonolite and basalt cores were more resistant and withstood the masses of ice. In this way, the solidified magma was exposed and it was this that gave the landscape its present appearance.
Wegbeschreibung
From the Landesschau parking lot, follow the signs towards the town center. Turn right at the small river Aach and follow it until you reach Schlachthausstraße (bridge). Turn right there. Pass the “Färbe” and follow the road. Cycle under the railroad bridge, turn left and cycle along the Aach to the Friedrich-Wöhler-Gymnasium. There you cross the two arms of the Aach and follow the small river for a longer stretch until you change back to the opposite bank. Shortly before Rielasingen, turn right.
At the entrance to the village, cross the road and turn right into Am Rebberg on the opposite side. At the end of the street, turn left into Römerstraße and then right into Hofenackerstraße in the valley. A little later you pass the border. Cross a junction and continue straight ahead. After a few hundred meters in Switzerland, you will enter German territory again. After entering Gottmadingen, turn left into Rielasinger Straße and follow this road. At the “Vorfahrtachten” sign on the main thoroughfare, turn left and at the parking lot cross a small wooden bridge to the gymnasium. You then cycle directly to the left, pass the kindergarten and turn left again into Im Tal. Follow this road past the building yard and out of the village. A little later, the gravel path leads you over the Biber. You reach another tarred path and turn right. After crossing the next bridge, turn right again. You soon come to an unpaved path that leads you along the Biber. This takes you to Randegg, where you turn right a little later onto the district road towards Gottmadingen and cycle left again immediately after the town sign, parallel to the Biber. On the left, you have a wonderful view of Randegg Castle. You reach the entrance to Bietingen, take the second road on the right, pass the Linde restaurant and keep straight on. Cross the B 34 and cycle straight on into the road opposite. Follow this road, cross a railroad bridge a little later and then follow the signs to Ebringen. You leave the village again, cross the K 6144 and finally reach Ebringen. Cycle along Thaynger Straße to the village center, turn left at the traffic island with a stone cross into Brunnenstraße and follow this road out of the village. You now stay on the tarred road and shortly afterwards reach the cycle path, which leads you to the left, parallel to the main road, to Riedheim. You pass the cemetery and then cross the B 314 at the traffic lights. In the village, turn left after the church into Hofwieser Straße. You will soon reach Hofwiesen via this uphill road.
Then turn right towards Binningen. You pass the town sign and continue straight ahead at the stop sign into Schulstraße. After the church, keep right, cycle up the hill and leave the village again. Pass an electricity pylon with Black Forest signs and take a left-hand bend to the right towards Weiterdingen. The small tarred road takes you past the Seeweilerhof farm and along the foot of the Hohenstoffeln. You reach Weiterdingen, turn left directly at the town sign and shortly afterwards come to the L 190, where you turn right. Cycle to the crossroads in the center of the village. Shortly after the turning right of way, keep right and turn into Hilzinger Straße. This will take you straight out of the village. At the crossroads, turn left. You pass above the Lochmühle farm and soon come to the L 190 again. Cross this and cycle straight on into Duchtlingen. You now stay on Hegaustraße, which you use to leave the village again, passing below the church. Always following the ascending tarred road, you soon reach the Mägdeberg. At the top of the hill, turn left to the Mägdeberg castle ruins, which are well worth seeing. The legendary phonolite mountain, 664 m above sea level, is considered a place of worship for mother goddesses by the Celts. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1240. In 1634, Mägdeberg Castle was burnt down by Widerholt. From 1650-53, Hans Jakob von Buchenberg rebuilt Mägdeberg Castle. The subsequent owners, the Counts of Rost, abandoned the castle around 1699 and built the castle at Mühlhausen, later to become the Adler Inn, as a replacement.
After the worthwhile visit, a tarred road leads you back downhill towards Mühlhausen (tip: a detour to the Hohenkrähen is possible halfway up). Shortly before the B 33, turn left onto a cycle path that takes you to an underpass. Cycle under this and into Mühlhausen. At a crossroads in the town, turn left into Ehinger Straße. Cycle over the railroad bridge and get into the left-turn lane after it to join the cycle path towards Ehingen. Shortly before Ehingen, turn right towards the Eugen-Schädler-Halle. Keep straight on for a while and then turn right after the first house. You now cycle past the Ehinger Ried nature reserve on the tarred road to Mühlhausen. Turn left at the town sign. A little later, the path runs parallel to the Saubach. At the next crossroads with a stone cross, continue straight on towards Schlatt and Krähen. After a poultry farm, keep left. In Schlatt u. Krähen, cycle to Schlatter-Dorf-Straße, cross it and leave the village again via Brühlstraße. Take the direction of Hausen a. d. Aach.
At the first fork after the town exit sign, first turn right, then straight ahead over the K 6124 onto a narrow paved path. Follow this to the left, cross under the highway a little later and reach Hausen a. d. Aach. In the village, turn right at the right-of-way sign (K 6122) and take the next immediate left. The road leads you downhill straight towards the “Zur Sonne” inn. Then turn left again towards Friedingen. Turn right at the first opportunity, cross a small bridge and you will come to a small tarred road. Shortly before the next bridge, keep right again and pass the Radolfzeller Aach nature reserve. At the next bridge, change sides and continue to follow the course of the river to Singen. You cross under the B 33 at the work of art and continue cycling parallel to the Aach. Shortly before the Aachbad, cross the river again and turn left again until you reach Schaffhauser Straße.
Change to the opposite side of the road and take the second path to the left, which runs directly along the Aach, and return to the starting point at the Landesgartenschau parking lot.
