Griener square

There are various explanations for the word “grien”:

1. Until 1825, the Hexenturm (Witches’ Tower), also known as the Griener Turm, stood at the southeast corner of the city fortifications. Perhaps it was covered with green bricks.

2. The word “grien” is said to evoke the weeping (Grienen) of women suspected of being witches who were imprisoned in the three-story round tower. However, there is no evidence of witches or trials against them in Radolfzell.

3. “Grien” could also mean gravel, rubble, or sand, as this area was washed by the lake’s waters before the lakeshore was filled in.
